Garry's mod is a very old, and at times, a slow game. Even though we are constantly looking to improve and benefit the server performance, at times players may experience issues. These issues can happen either on the server's end due to hardware limitations, or on the client's end for countless reasons.
FPS or Frames Per Second is the measure of how fast a player's computer can render the game. It is also known as Frame Rate, or also referred to as Client Lag. Low FPS can result in choppy gameplay similar to lag, but it's completely player sided. Typically, the newer and more powerful your computer is, the less likely it is that you will encounter FPS issues.
There are various things that can affect FPS such as too high of graphic or model quality, or having certain commands enabled.
Right click on garry's mod in your steam library, go to properties, and select the beta tab. From there, you are going to want to select the x86-64 + chromium version.
Turn your garry's mod options down.
Enable Multicore Rendering in the garry's mod options menu.
Utilize the !fps command while on the server.
Clean out your garry's mod caches and unsubscribe from all unused or old addons you downloaded.
fps_max 0 - Removes the FPS limit.r_shadows 0 - Removes shadows from rendering, also prevents gmod shadow bugs from happening.mat_specular 0 - Some assets have special textures that are affected by light, and might not render correctly for you or the server that you are playing on. This removes that issue when models are pink and shiny.r_drawmodeldecals 0 - Prevents bullet holes, blood splatter, blaster marks, etc. from showing up on props/vehicles/models of any kind. Garry's Mod has a tough time rendering these things on high poly models, so it helps to disable it all together.r_decals 0 - Prevents bullet holes and all that jazz from showing up too often or at all, helps immensely with FPS. (Kind of does the same thing as the command above, but disables decals globally.)gmod_mcore_test 1 - If you have joined our servers, you would have noticed a FPS Booster popup menu. This is the command it runs, and basically allows gmod to utilize a CPU core properly.threadpool_affinity 2 - This tells Garry's Mod the amount of CPU-Cores it is allowed to use. I personally have it set to 2, and I have an i7-9700f at the time of writing this guide. 8 for octa-core, 6 for hexa-core, 4 for quad-core, 2 for double-core.mem_max_heapsize 4000 - This tells Garry's Mod the total amount of RAM it is allowed to use. The number variable is set in MB, so if you want to dedicate 2GB of RAM, enter 2000 instead, and so on.Suggested Steps
